Two down, sixteen to go (walls & ceiling painted, new window shade installed)

In Friday’s post, I made a list of 18 things to do to complete the studio. This weekend, I crossed two of them off the list. I finally painted the ceiling and walls, it was a big job. And then the last window shade arrived on Saturday, so I installed it.

First, I’ll show you how the newly painted ceiling and walls changed the look of the room. For a long time, I lived with partially painted walls and ceiling. I started painting the areas to be painted to install the cabinets. And after those areas were painted, progress on the rest of the ceiling and walls stalled because (1) those areas didn’t need to be painted, and (2) painting the ceiling seemed like a huge task, so I put it off for as long as I could.

So the room has looked like this for a long time, with part of the ceiling painted white and most of it blue, and parts of the walls painted Benjamin Moore Classic Gray and the rest blue.

So this is my big project, which I am determined to finally finish this weekend. Once I got the ceiling painted, I was really surprised at how bright the room looked. The blue roof is not dark either. It was a very pale blue, yet the white made a huge difference. I still need to put the lights back on the ceiling, so right now, there are tons of crazy shadows on the ceiling. But at least everything is one color now!

And of course, the classic gray walls now look much brighter and cleaner. This picture makes it look like I installed the lights above the cabinets, but it’s just a ceiling light hanging down and shining on the wall. I still plan on putting lights in the cubbies.

Ahhh…look how bright and clean this big wall is! Now I’m anxious to install the rest of the trim. This is great!

And then the second item on my list that I checked off was installing a new shade on the window that sits inside the office area cabinets.

I was a bit disappointed with this shade. I ordered My absolute favorite unlined woven shade (affiliate link) I ordered the other two for this room, the home gym, and the one in the master bathroom from the same small business on Amazon. I absolutely love these shades and one of the best things about them is that the company will cut them to your custom measurements (width and length) to fit your window.

So I placed my order, as usual, and then messaged them with the custom measurements. But this time they didn’t get my message. And by the time I realized I hadn’t heard back from them (they always respond to confirm receipt of a customization request), they had already shipped the shade without customizations.

They offered to send me another one, but it took two weeks, I didn’t want to wait. So I ended up customizing the width by cutting 1/2-inch off each end with my miter saw. I was going to try customizing the length as well, but it’s only three inches long and I decided it wasn’t worth the trouble.

I was a little disappointed at the extra work it took, but once I installed it, my disappointment disappeared. Since I leave the shades open 99.9% of the time, no one can tell it’s too long. I’m the only one who bothers with it and I forget about it as long as the shade is open. I love the warmth and texture it adds to this area!

Now I can finally see how my landscape design will look on a light gray wall. I’m still going to make a larger print and frame it, but I can use this to see what it will look like.

I tried taping it to the wall to get a better idea, but it wouldn’t hang straight. 😀 Then the new one, which includes the plant key, takes up more space between the trim on the left and the thermostat on the right.

Here is the progress. Two down, sixteen to go.

  • Finish painting the ceiling and walls;
  • install and paint baseboards;
  • Install and paint door casings on both doors;
  • Paint both doors;
  • paint base on work tables;
  • Add a painted desk and two drawers;
  • Paint Swatch Paint the black parts of the cabinet white;
  • Terminate wiring electrical outlets;
  • Add lights to the cubbies;
  • Finish trim on office area cabinets;
  • Install a window shade;
  • Reupholster desk chair;
  • Make the pendant light;
  • frame and hang landscape design;
  • Decorate a long, blank wall;
  • Clean and touchup paint on the floor;
  • Finish adjustable doors and drawers;
  • Install drawer pulls and door knobs.

I’m trying my best to finish by the end of this month, but that’s just a target. If it takes a little more time, I’ll be okay with that.
