Who is a friend? Collins Dictionary defines a friend as a person well known to another and regarded with liking, affection and loyalty. We may not often realize it, but having a circle of friends and building social connections can lead to better mental health and confidence. Being around great company can also inspire you to do better in life. But friendship is not a one way street. So, everyone should know how to be a good friend.
Who is a good friend?
A good friend is an effective support system and someone who doesn’t just try to please their friend. They are balanced and ready to challenge their friends’ actions and beliefs when they go wrong and stand by them when times are tough. They don’t just look for a brief good time with others, but also invest their time and energy into building meaningful connections, says clinical psychologist Dr. Kamna Chibber.
How to be a good friend?
There are many ways you can become someone’s best friend. Try practicing some of these tips to be a better friend:
1. Be your authentic self
When we meet someone for the first time, we usually put on a facade and show our good side. It’s only when that friendship grows that we feel comfortable being vulnerable and showing our true selves in front of our friends. True friendship begins when we gather the courage to show who we really are and take that friendship forward. “Share your thoughts and opinions openly with your friends,” says Dr Chibber.
2. Always give constructive feedback
Sometimes when we give feedback to others, our tone becomes rude and we start sounding too critical. Always remember the fact that not everyone takes criticism equally. If you have a sensitive friend, try to be sensitive about the words you use to convey feedback. In other words, always try and give constructive feedback. Be aware of the impact your words and actions have on your friend, says an expert.

3. Always be there
Be there when your friend needs your support. Give advice that is fair and will help your friend in the long run. Our life sometimes faces a rough situation. Being a loyal friend means that you are there for that person through thick and thin. As a good friend, it is your responsibility to help the person recover from the darkest stages of life.
4. Share your side of the story
Being a good friend doesn’t just mean being an active listener, but also being someone who is willing to talk and share what’s going on in your life. You can develop a level of comfort in sharing the events of your life.
5. Stop making assumptions and just ask
It’s always easier to judge someone when you don’t know their real story. So, if you notice a change in behavior or strange patterns before you prepare your mind to imagine, try asking your friend about the matter. This will strengthen your bond with your friend.
6. Give each other room to make mistakes
To err is human. We all know that to be true. Perfectionism is a myth and expecting it from others will definitely ruin your friendship. You are not perfect or your friend will never be. So, make room for mistakes and allow each other to be flawed as you grow together. Getting over each other’s faults is the best way to deepen your relationship.
